The Coming Revolution

Please, please.

Just when you think our demented leader can’t go any lower, he jumps right in and proves that there is no basement in this fool’s mind. What, indeed, truly does go on in that diseased brain of his? Is this just narcissism gone amok? Or is it insanity informed by racism? Or greed corrupted further by bad parenting? Yes to all. And I could go on. But the question that continually haunts me, is not about that monster, but rather of the millions who voted him into this office, my fellow(?) citizens. And not once, which could have been discounted as an aberration, but then again, even after being exposed continually to his venality and criminality. The man (?) spent most of his years out of office (’20-’24) defending himself in one court after another, and being convicted for business fraud, and rape—such a paragon of virtue. And yet, these same people thought he was fit to run again. Not that he had somehow miraculously changed his stripes, but that they liked those stripes. Apparently, wanted more of the corruption and cruelty. Wanted their fellow citizens and workers attacked and sent out of the country—or worse, much worse.

I can’t explain it, and venting doesn’t really help anybody, including me. I now try to skip over almost every news story that includes trump (always deserving of lower-case) in the headline. It’s more than I can handle. So deeply sickening. And as noted above, it always goes down to further abominations—as the world watches the U.S. murder Venezuelans in their fishing boats and steal their oil.

But what now? How to stop it? Is that possible? Sure, his ratings  are in the toilet, where they belong, and he and his totally corrupt justice department lose case after case in the courts, but none of that seems to impact or stop them. All my words, and all of those with much greater audiences and much more knowledge, have little impact. The king has no clothes and there is no one in his closed circle who dares tell him. And any who dare speak out are attacked with false charges. We have become a despotic third world country, edging on to something even darker—the disappeared in Argentina, the rise of Nazism in the 30’s. What comes next is sometimes all we can think of. Many make plans to flee the country. And many more, understandably, hide their heads in the sand.

Still there’s a glimmer of hope. This regime, I must believe, will eventually self-destruct. What I can’t yet see is when or how. Maybe we are on the brink of a popular revolution, one that will play out both on the streets with protests of all sorts and then at the ballot box. 2026 is near and there is hope that it is a healing year, at least in part. Recent elections make clear that the majority of Americans are disgusted by the evil that now dominates, as ICE runs wild in the streets, and people of both parties are scared of their economic ability to survive in a regime that only benefits the very rich. Vote the bastards out! It’s the only way. Do everything you can to make that happen. Or else he will go even lower. Count on it.

Yes, how right you are! But why don’t they care about popularity? Seems obvious to me that they are not going to allow elections. November 2026 might be too late.

That’s why we have to support the groups that are working to protect the integrity of the elections. Trump has lots of lawyers/thugs but they’re all idiots.

Thomas Paine never envisioned the apathy and indifference of the American public when he coined the phrase “sunshine patriots.” Those who love America when it is easy to do so. As long as they are not affected, there must not be a problem. Our education system must change so that people understand how vital a vote is. Love this entry!

Hoping we (most) are now beyond the apathy stage. This next year will tell all. Thanks for the comment.

Neighbor Chris here. What I’ve been doing is reading the hopeful bits where can find them – Michelle Goldberg in the NYT today, “Trump is Getting Weaker and the Resistance is Getting Stronger.” Anything by Heather Cox Richardson. And I dug out my school copy of The Federalist Papers. The guy who edited it in 1961 included a cheat sheet (the important ones are… he lists 21 of the 85, a good tip for a slow, dyslexic reader like me…) Inspired by Ken Burn’s doc. on the American Revolution, I got a copy of Thomas Paine’s Common Sense. Even if I’m more informed, it won’t help if I get in a argument with a trumper (trumpet?), but I feel better, now understanding material I slept through in class. Now this stuff matters. C
