An occasional missive

Outrage—and a plea

I’m wondering this morning how much more this country can take under the Trump regime before there is an implosion or explosion. Every day it gets worse. Yesterday, at the Charlie Kirk memorial Trump sneeringly told the crowd that, unlike Kirk, he hates his opponents. That’s our president talking, telling me and millions of others that he hates us, and is looking to come after us. I know the man is a fool, that he is unhinged, and from all apparent measures, increasingly demented. But somehow, he keeps going—one awful, scary day after the next. Who, besides his base, has he not insulted and threatened, told that if they did not bend to his authoritarian will, they would be eliminated. See Jimmie Kimmel, see Stephen Colbert, see the republican justice department lawyer fired because he couldn’t find evidence to go after Trump’s perceived enemies.

What do we do? How to resist, how to maintain sanity? We can hunker down, pull the blankets over our heads and plug our ears, but that only works for so long. You can’t hide from this sort of assault. Like old age and dementia, it doesn’t get better. How do you stop a mad man and his henchmen and women—toadies, sycophants all. Look at Kash Patel, Pete Hegseth, Pam Bondi—all vastly unqualified for their positions, all willing to do and say anything, to take orders without question from the dear leader. If this is not already an autocratic regime, it’s damn close.

Still, it is encouraging whenever or wherever resistance is heard and seen—from journalists at the New York Times and other honest media sources. And from everyday citizens who refuse to be silenced. Non-cooperation is the key I believe. Easy to say, though, when you are not being hunted in the streets and at your workplace, or when you have enough resources to not be scared of losing your job because you say the wrong thing and get reported for saying that thing. The spies are everywhere. JD Vance told people to call a person’s employer if they heard them say something mean about the martyr Charlie. Damn, what does that remind you of? But we all have to go on living, somehow continue to thrive and breathe and do the things that make us happy, though some days are harder than others. Who ever expected to live in a country like this one has become—one I no longer recognize. Let’s keep resisting any way we can; let’s get together with other open-minded, concerned citizens and see what we can do collectively. Let’s donate money to candidates who have a decent chance of upsetting the regime. And let’s do everything possible or seemingly impossible, to take back control of the House in 2026.

That would be a good start to holding the line.
