By now, if you’re not both angry and scared about what’s going on in our country, you’re either not paying attention or part of the problem. Without turning away (which is sometimes advisable), every hour brings a new horror, a new shock to the system, another attack on decency and democracy. Bill Mahre, (though I often disagree with him), has called it a “slow-moving coup.” I think that’s pretty accurate—except for the slow part. These evil-doers are barreling through every guard-rail, every law, every dictate of the Constitution. Damn, trump (he doesn’t deserve capitalization) has only been in office for 6 months, what’s going to happen the next 3 years?
I find myself often despairing and feeling hopeless. Yes, the ’26 mid-terms are coming up and hopefully there may be some power shift in D.C., but I’m wary that the Maga party will corrupt and steal the election. They’re already well on that path—see Texas. Protests might bring temporary relief and a sense that the majority of Americans are also appalled, but the next day the National Guard is arresting people on the streets of the Capitol, and notables who dare to criticize the senile king are raided by the FBI. The courts don’t appear able to help, or willing to in the case of the less-than-supreme court. The U.S. is becoming a joke all over the globe. World leaders meet to discuss how to deal with this crazy person, and his hidden handlers. All the while, Fox news and the other Maga shills tell their true believers that Donny deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. Maybe he’ll share it with Putin.
If you’re now waiting for me to try to explain what can be done, I’m afraid you’ll have a long wait. I try to go on living my life, writing, surfing, talking to friends, enjoying family. Blocking out the bad stuff, taking in only as much as I can manage without losing my tenuous grip. I’m hoping somebody can come up with a plan to put an end to this insanity. Gov. Newsome seems to be getting under the Don’s baggy-ass skin, but that’s not going to bring him down. I do admire those politicians who are speaking our collective outrage, at the same time as I am sickened by the sycophancy and the gutlessness of the Republicans. In their dried-up hearts, they know the man is corrupt and that he’s tearing apart the soul of the country, and yet they vote in lock-step for each new insult. Though too often used, the comparisons to Nazi Germany in the 1930’s cannot be ignored. The regular German citizens probably thought Hitler would eventually just go away and all would return to normalcy. Didn’t quite work out. Eventually, if not stopped, they will come for all of us.
It can’t happen here we tell ourselves. But it is. Right now.
